Rehabilitating-Existing-Building-in-Highland-Park-Michigan
Jan-26-2007 Update
from our portfolio of Recent Projects
The existing building in Highland Park was a Super Market until a couple of years ago. It has been lying vacant since the closure of the Super Market. Now the facility owners have commissioned an architect to rehabilitate the building.
I am working with the architect on some structural design aspects of the facility. It is a nominally 13000 square feet building. The structure consists of exterior block masonry walls, interior steel columns, and steel beams supporting open web steel joists. On the exterior, there is face brick on block masonry on all sides.
Structurally there are 3 bays on each side. The East-West center bay will house the new entrance on the East side. Most of the East-West bay would receive a new trussed roof.
The architect has done a great job with the plans for rehabilitating the building -- it will be spruced up, it will have very good space utilization, and it will be user-friendly.
Although it is an older building that has been lying vacant for a couple of years, structurally the facility is in decent shape. I am presenting here some pictures of the exterior of the building.
Stay tuned -- in a future post I will present more pictures of the interior framing of the building.
