Brick Masonry Repair -- Structural Integrity Restoration for Components in an older building

The face brick is fired brick that is headered into sand-lime brick work on the inside. There are some tell tales of some shelf angles at some places but it appears they have been long lost to coorsion.

My buddy Herb Simms of Michigan General Masonry -- the contractor on this job called me to look at beam and column components that had been severely damaged from the effects of freeze-thaw and deicing salts.

The infill brick wall is in need of lateral support to arrest its buckling and out-of-plane movement

It is an older structure -- and you always have the dilemma of how far you want to go with the repair. You can not restore and renew the structure to its original mint condition. And of course you come to the conclusion that as a minimum you do enough to restore the structural integrity for safety considerations.

I present here some drawings that depict the strategy to restore the lateral support to the brick wall for safety considerations.
