Structural-Integrity-Review-of-Apartments-Subsequent-To-Fire-In-Complex

Project CF_B1-111
from our portfolio of Recent Projects

Our Recent-Projects Include New Construction As-Well-As Addition and Renovation of House, Commercial, Condo, Light-Industrial, Multi-Family Buildings, ...

My colleague -- architect Chet Bartosik called me up to help him with structural integrity review of the apartment buildings in a large complex -- a number of apartments got gutted because of fire starting in one apartment.

The apartments that were gutted and the ones with substantial fire damage will face the wrecking ball.

I conducted a walk-down survey to review the integreity of the structure of those apartments that can be salvaged.

I will post here pictures from my walk-down survey of the interior and the exterior of the buildings.

We did demarcate the fateful wall -- the apartments to the North of that wall will be demolished, and the apartments to the South of the wall will be salvaged. Structural modification / reinforcement will be provided as necessary.

After the demolition of the damaged apartments, the fateful wall will then become an exterior wall. From the walk-down-survey, we could not determine whether the fateful wall has an independent footing or if it was supported on thickened slab.

We will have to make sure that the fateful wall that will become the exterior wall has an adequate footing with the bottom of the footing located below the frost line, or a shallow frost protected foundation.
